NEW OPENING FOR A SEVERO OCHOA POSTDOC POSITION: "Milky way stellar streams"

Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas   Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía   Excelencia Severo Ochoa   HR Excellence in Research
Deadline:
October, 17th 2019
Type:
SO-IAA postdoc
Code:
SO_R3_001
Introduction:

There is a new opening for a Severo Ochoa Postdoc position at the IAA, funded by the Severo Ochoa Excellence grant. Candidates are expected to carry out their activity in the research line of Star formation in the MIlky Way and Local Universe.
This is a two year position. Candidates should have a PhD in Astrophysics, with experience in the study of resolved stellar populations in galaxies and precision photometry of wide fields.

Tasks:

Main tasks will be:

1) To develop a new narrow-band photometric technique to detect new stellar streams, isolated accreted stars and select bona-fide star samples in known streams in the Galactic halo using the unprecedented set of filters of the J-PAS and J-PLUS surveys.

2) To undertake a new comprehensive study of the Sagittarius tidal stream (the most luminous stream around the Milky Way) as a testing bench of this technique. This includes to characterize the star formation and kinematic across the Sagittarius tidal stream with the new data.

3) Using all these unprecedented data (including kinematic from Gaia DR2), the postdoc will collaborate with theoretical astronomer to obtain a updated theoretical N-body simulation of the Sagittarius stream that fits all these new observations of this stream.

4)With the new data and Sagittarius stream simulations, to explore if the Sgr-MW interaction is the responsible of the formation of the stellar warp and other disturbances observed in outer disk of our Galaxy.

Period (months):
24 months

The fellowships include a competitive salary and full health insurance. Selected candidates will be included in SO-IAA grants, which provide additional funds for scientific visits, attendance to advanced schools and workshops, and other training activities.

IAA is an equal opportunity institution. Applications to this program by female scientists are particularly encouraged.
